Collecting photos from guests: what works, what does not
· 2 min read
After every party the best photos are on your guests' phones, and most never reach you. The solutions that work have one thing in common: the guest has nothing to do afterwards. A shared album needs an app and an invitation, paper disposable cameras need developing, and a loose request in the group chat yields five photos of the fifty that exist. Below are the options, with their downsides, and the approach that yields the most.
View the collectionOption 1: asking in the group chat
Free and fast, and it yields little. Whoever forwards photos does so in low quality and in small batches, and the rest forget. Only works with a small group you can ask in person.
Option 2: a shared album
An album in a photo app guests can add to. Works well for those who have the same app; the rest have to create an account or install an app, and some do not. You also only ask after the party, when the attention is gone.
Option 3: paper disposable cameras
Atmospheric and tangible: a camera per table, and guests take photos all evening. Downsides: you pay per camera and per development, you only see weeks later what is on them, and half the photos are dark or blurry. Nice as an extra, not as the only solution.
Option 4: one page where every guest uploads right away
The guest takes a photo on their own phone, taps a button in the invitation, and the photo is on a shared page right away that only the invited know. No app, no account, and you ask at the moment itself, in the invitation everyone already has open. At YourInvited that is the Disposable camera module (€9,99 per event): after the party all photos sit together on one page, where everyone can view and download them.
How to get the most out of it
Whichever option you pick:
- Say it ahead, in the invitation: "Take photos, and share them through the link."
- Say it again at the party: a card on the table with a QR code, or a word from the master of ceremonies.
- Give a reason: "We are not in a single photo of the evening party ourselves."
- Ask permission for photos of children, and do not put photos of guests online without asking.
Frequently asked questions
Do guests see each other's photos?
On a shared page, yes: that is the point, everyone relives the party from the other side too. If you do not want that, pick an option where only you receive the photos.
How long do the photos stay available?
That depends on the service. At YourInvited a free event disappears 14 days after the day of your party; with Lite or Pro it is kept. Download the photos yourself in any case, then it depends on nobody.
Does this replace the photographer?
No. The photographer takes the photos you frame; the guests take the photos that make you laugh. You want both.
Make your own invitation?
Pick a style, add your own text and photos and share one link. Starting is free; a paid style costs €4,99 or €7,99 once, per event.
