Birthday and party

Birthday invitation wording: examples

· 3 min read

A good birthday invitation says in a few lines whose birthday it is, when and where the party is, what happens and how to let you know whether they are coming. The tone may be yours: funny, warm, or short and businesslike. Below are sample texts for a party with friends, a kids' party, a milestone and a dinner, followed by the checklist of what always has to be on it.

What always has to be on it

Whatever tone you pick, guests want to know this:

  • Whose birthday it is, and the age if you want to say it.
  • The date, the start time and the end time if it is fixed.
  • The venue, with the address.
  • What happens: a dinner, a party, an outing.
  • A theme or dress code, if there is one.
  • By when you expect a reply.
  • A gift tip, or simply "no gifts".

Party with friends

"I'm turning 35 and we're celebrating. Saturday 7 March from 8 pm at my place, Lindenlaan 12. Drinks and bites are taken care of; bring your own dance moves. Let me know before 1 March whether you're coming."

Kids' party

Write to the parents, not only to the child, and put the practical things first:

"Noor is turning 6! She's celebrating on Wednesday 18 March from 2 to 5 pm at our place, Beukenstraat 4. We'll craft, eat cake and play in the garden, so clothes that may get dirty. Drop your child off at 2, pick up at 5. Let us know before 11 March whether Noor can count on your child."

Milestone: 30, 40, 50

"Fifty. The number sounds bigger than it feels, so we're making a party of it. Saturday 20 June from 7 pm at Zaal De Linde, Dorpsstraat 1, Herent. Food, drinks, music and a few old photos you'd rather not have seen. Coming? Reply before 1 June."

At a milestone the invitation itself may be bigger too: a photo from then and now, a short timeline, or a word from whoever is hosting.

Dinner in a small circle

"No big party this year, but a long table. Friday 10 April at 7 pm at our place. Tell me before 3 April whether you're in and whether there's anything you don't eat."

Short is good here. The people you invite already know you; the invitation only has to pin down the arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Do you put your age on the invitation?

That is up to you. At a milestone the number is often the reason for the party, so it belongs on it. At an ordinary birthday you can leave it out and nobody will miss it.

How do you ask for no gifts?

Directly and kindly: "Your coming is gift enough." If you do want something, say what: a contribution to a trip, a bottle for the cellar, a gift list. Guests prefer a clear tip to guessing.

What is the easiest way to share the invitation?

With one link in the group chat or by email. On a YourInvited digital invitation the text sits with your photos in the style you chose, guests reply with one tap, and you see in your studio who is coming.

Make your own invitation?

Pick a style, add your own text and photos and share one link. Starting is free; a paid style costs €4,99 or €7,99 once, per event.
