What to write on a wedding invitation
· 3 min read
A wedding invitation carries your names, the date, the time and the venue of the ceremony and the party, which part of the day the guest is invited to, how and by when you expect a reply, and the practical details a guest needs: dress code, parking, accommodation and a gift tip. Below is every part with an example, so you can write the text tonight.

Guests read an invitation most easily in this order:
- Who is getting married: your names in full, the way you want them read.
- Who is inviting, if that is the parents or the two of you together with them.
- The date, written out: Saturday 12 June 2027.
- The ceremony: time and venue, with the full address.
- The reception, the dinner and the evening party: each with time and address if it is somewhere else.
- Which part of the day this guest is invited to.
- The RSVP: how and by when you expect a reply.
- Practical: dress code, parking, accommodation, children, a gift tip.
Sample wording: classic
Formal and complete, for when the parents invite along:
"With great joy we invite you to the wedding of Sara and Tom. The ceremony takes place on Saturday 12 June 2027 at 2 pm at Leuven town hall, Grote Markt 9. Afterwards you are welcome at the reception and dinner at Kasteel Ter Heide, Heidestraat 1, Herent. Kindly reply before 1 May."
Sample wording: relaxed
Shorter and in your own voice, for an invitation you share in a chat:
"We're getting married! On Saturday 12 June 2027 we say yes at Leuven town hall, and afterwards we celebrate at Kasteel Ter Heide. We hope you'll be there. Let us know before 1 May whether you're coming, and with whom."
Both texts give the same information. The difference is the tone, and that may be yours.
Parts of the day: who is invited to what?
Most couples do not invite everyone for the whole day. Say so clearly, without detours: "You are welcome from 8 pm at the evening party" is kinder than a guest wondering why the dinner is not on their invitation. On a digital invitation you list the parts of the day one under the other, each with time and address, and write at each part who it is meant for.
What to leave out
The venue's registration number, the full menu or a list of twenty rules: none of that belongs on the invitation. Keep it readable. Everything useful but not essential (the route, the hotels nearby, the playlist) goes on a separate page or lower on the digital invitation, where whoever needs it finds it.
Frequently asked questions
Do you put a gift tip on the wedding invitation?
Yes, short and at the bottom. "Your presence is our greatest gift. If you would like to give something, a contribution to our honeymoon is welcome" is enough. On a digital invitation you can add a gift list or your account number, so guests do not have to ask.
Does the dress code have to be on the invitation?
Only if you have one. Then write what you mean in plain words: "festive, no suit needed" is clearer than "cocktail attire".
How do you ask for a reply?
With a date and a way. "Let us know before 1 May whether you're coming" and a button or an address. On a digital invitation guests reply with one tap, and in your studio you see who has already answered and who needs a reminder.
Make your own invitation?
Pick a style, add your own text and photos and share one link. Starting is free; a paid style costs €4,99 or €7,99 once, per event.
