Communion invitation wording: examples

· 3 min read

A communion or spring celebration invitation is written in your child's name or in the parents', and it gives two moments: the service (in church or at school) and the party after it, each with time and address. Add a gift tip, whether other children are welcome and by when you want a reply. Below are sample texts for a first communion, a confirmation and a spring celebration, followed by the checklist.

First communion, in the child's words

"Hello! I'm Lou and on Sunday 10 May I'm making my first communion. The service is at 10 am in Saint Martin's church in Herent. Afterwards we celebrate at our place, Kerkstraat 8, from noon, with a long table and a big cake. Are you coming too? Let mum and dad know before 20 April."

Confirmation, in the parents' words

"On Saturday 16 May Milan receives his confirmation at the Church of Our Lady in Leuven, at 3 pm. We warmly invite you to the party that follows, from 5 pm at Zaal De Linde, Dorpsstraat 1. Kindly reply before 25 April, and let us know if there is anything you do not eat."

Spring celebration

"On Sunday 17 May Nel celebrates her spring celebration. At 10 am there is the ceremony at school, at De Boomgaard primary school, and from noon we carry on at our place, Lindenlaan 12. We hope to see you. Let us know before 1 May whether you will be there."

A spring celebration (lentefeest) is non-religious; the invitation needs no religious words. Otherwise it works exactly the same.

The checklist

This belongs on every version:

  • Your child's name, and what is celebrated: first communion, solemn communion or confirmation, spring celebration.
  • The service: date, time and place, with the address.
  • The party: time and place, with the address.
  • Which part this guest is invited to, if not everyone comes to both.
  • Whether other children are welcome.
  • A gift tip: many parents save for something big, so say so.
  • By when you expect a reply, and how.

A photo and a line of their own

What makes the invitation your child's: a recent photo, and a line the child chose. "I hope you come, because there's cake" says more than three lines from the parents. On a digital invitation you put the photo big at the top and let the child help pick the style.

Frequently asked questions

Do you put the gift tip on the invitation?

Yes, short and at the bottom, and preferably concrete. "Lou is saving for a new bike" is clearer than "an envelope is welcome". On a digital invitation you can add a wish list or your account number with the Gift list module (€9,99 per event).

When do you send the invitation?

Six to eight weeks ahead. Communions and spring celebrations fall in the same weeks of April and May, and many families have several. Whoever invites early is sure of their guests.

Do you invite the classmates?

Usually not to the family party; the class often celebrates separately. If you do want a few friends there, say so clearly in the invitation to their parents, with the time to drop off and pick up.

Make your own invitation?

Pick a style, add your own text and photos and share one link. Starting is free; a paid style costs €4,99 or €7,99 once, per event.
